Sir James Winford is a three-time widower. He believes he is cursed, and is certain death to any woman he loves. He has vowed never to love again.
Emily, the ghost of Sir James's first wife has unfinished business, and still lingers at Winford Manor. She wants to see her husband happy, and she wants to bring her murderer to justice.
Rose has loved Sir James since childhood. She must live with the unspeakable things she has done trying to make James see her as more than a child. She believes she is close to achieving that goal when Leslie shows up.
Leslie and Sir James share the experience of losing a loved one. Will Leslie be the woman to break the curse? Or will she be just another victim.
Leslie closed the
door, turned, and leaned back against it. She glared at her roommate,
Stephanie.
“What? Did I do
something?” Stephanie asked in her British accent. Stephanie was sitting in the
oversize loveseat that sat in front of the small television set. Her feet were resting
on the coffee table. She had a container of ice cream in her lap and a spoon in
her hand. She pressed the mute button on the remote control.
“No, it’s not
you. It’s men! They’re the same here as they were in the States.”
“What do you
mean?” Stephanie put a spoonful of the cold treat into her mouth.
“What happened to
the first kiss being special? Every guy I’ve dated since David died has been
interested in only one thing. He wants to get his tongue down my throat, and
his hands in my pants, before he even knows my name. This guy called me babe
all night. It was our first date for God’s sake. Couldn’t he wait until the
second one before he had his hands all over me?”
“It’s sad, but
that’s the way it is, luv.” Stephanie eyed up the empty spoon before digging in
the carton for more.
“It shouldn’t be.
There has to be somebody out there who’s not like that.”
“Tell you what,
next Saturday let’s go out to the Gypsy camp at Winford Estates. We can have
our fortunes read. I went there once before, the woman was really good. Maybe
she can tell you if you’re going to meet him.” Stephanie put the spoon in her
mouth. She rolled her eyes to the back of her head, expressing her pleasure.
“Saturday sounds
good to me.” At least I won’t have to
worry about another groping date.
Leslie pushed
away from the door and headed for her bedroom. She stripped and showered.
Before going to bed she stood in front of the dresser. She looked at her lonely
reflection in the mirror. She picked up the picture she kept on the dresser.
She gently caressed the glass covering the picture. She and David vowed to take
pictures of their life and the family they made together. She didn’t have many
pictures of her family, and now everyone was gone. Her father died when she was
in college. Her mother passed away shortly after she married David. She was an
only child and wasn’t close to her only aunt. She sometimes wondered at that.
She and David took the picture in her hand to start their family album. There
would be no album.
The car crash took his life. He had been driving, but she still felt responsible. She wanted to go to the movies that night. He didn’t. She was the one that should have died. Instead she had a bum leg. It had been broken in a number of places, and the large scar on her thigh would keep her from winning any beauty pageants. She didn’t care about the way her leg looked or even that it still hurt five years later. She missed her husband.
