Sir James Winford is a three-time widower. He believes he is cursed and is certain death to any woman he loves. He has vowed never to love again.
Emily, the ghost of Sir James's first wife has unfinished business, and still lingers at Winford Manor. She wants to see her husband happy, and she wants to bring her murderer to justice.
Rose has loved Sir James since childhood. She must live with the unspeakable things she has done trying to make James see her as more than a child. She believes she is close to achieving that goal when Leslie shows up.
Leslie and Sir James share the experience of losing a loved one. Will Leslie be the woman to break the curse? Or will she be just another victim.
Leslie
smiled. “Thank you,” she said then sat down next to Margaret.
Edward
continued to play while James and Danton sang. Rose moved closer to James. She
wrapped her arm in his and joined in the merriment.
“Do
you know who the ghost is?” Leslie asked Margaret.
“You’re
a curious one, aren’t you, dear? I thought we would wait until after church,
but to answer your question, yes, I do know who it is.”
“Are
you going to tell me?” Leslie nearly bounced in her excitement.
“She
is my first daughter-in-law, Emily.”
Leslie’s
voice faltered. “The Emily whose clothes I have? The Emily that James loves?”
“Loved,
dear.”
“No,
he still loves her. I still love my husband, so I understand how he feels.”
“You
are married, dear?”
“No,
my husband is dead,” she said, fighting back tears. “I still miss him.”
“I’m
sorry,” Margaret said. She reached for Leslie’s hand.
“No,
I’m the one who should be apologizing. I didn’t mean to cry. I get a little
melancholy around the holidays.”
“I
understand. I do that myself sometimes.” Margaret patted Leslie’s hand.
Leslie
squeezed Margaret’s hand in shared experience. “I don’t know anything about
ghosts, but does Emily know why she’s still here? I mean, there’s usually a
reason a spirit stays earthbound, isn’t there?”
Margaret tilted her head. She paused briefly as if listening to a voice only she had heard. “Yes, Emily thinks she was murdered. Not only that, she thinks all of James’s wives were murdered.”
