Mystic Museum magic is in the air!
“Harold already checked the weather station. We’re
not expected to get any rain today,” Nadine said with a smile tickling the
sides of her mouth.
Shamika’s shoulders slumped as she sighed with
resignation. “I was afraid of that.”
“Funny, Harold said the same thing when he heard
the report.”
“I bet he did.” Shamika crossed her arms over her
chest and leaned back against the kitchen counter.
“He and Nate are saddling the horses now. I told
Harold to get the saddlebags Hugo and I used to use. Hugo fixed those bags so
we could carry a picnic lunch quite easily. I used to enjoy those picnics.”
Harold stormed into the kitchen. The screen door
slammed closed behind him. Shamika could feel the anger wafting from him.
“Now, Harold, I taught you better than that. You
know how I feel about slamming the screen door,” she said, clucking her tongue.
“You don’t like it any more than I like being
shanghaied into being a tour guide.” He scowled at his mother and glared at
Shamika.
“Don’t look at me like that. It wasn’t my idea,”
Shamika said.
Nate tied the horses to the post outside the
kitchen. He opened the door. “I brought the horses over.” He made sure the door
closed gently.
“Well, finally, someone with manners who knows how
to enter a house,” Nadine praised.
“If he’s such a good boy with fine manners, why
don’t you have him escort Mika around today?” Harold ground out.
“I’d be more than happy to,” Nate said with
laughter in his voice. He looked at Nadine hopefully, and then his gaze settled
on her. He flashed a smile that had probably melted many a heart. Shamika
rolled her eyes.
“That’s very nice of you, Nate, but Harold will do
it,” Nadine answered.
Harold shot Nate a look filled with venom. What
was that all about? Shamika wondered. Harold was the one that suggested Nate in
the first place. What did it matter to him who took her on this tour anyway?
Nate didn’t seem to notice. Maybe he was so used to those looks that it didn’t
faze him anymore.
