BLURB:

The odds are against him, but Jerin will find a way! With or without the gene Kaley will be his…

On Setera, only one in four hundred thousand is born possessing the cryan gene—a gene essential to the survival of the Seteran race. Jerin and the others like him are duty bound to find the match to that gene somewhere in the universe, for it can no longer be found on Setera. With no clear instructions on how this task is to be accomplished it is a daunting undertaking, like finding a needle in a haystack.

Jerin’s assigned quadrant is Earth. After twelve years of searching he is beginning to lose hope, until the answer hits him over the head with a frying pan. Now all he has to do is convince this beautiful, feisty woman to follow him to another universe in a galaxy far far away.

TEASER / EXCERPT:

“I am an alien. Setera is in the Onaris One solar system.”

She stared at him for a long moment and then laughed.

“You’re kidding, right?” She searched his face. “You don’t look like you are kidding.” She sounded frightened.

He squeezed her hands trying to reassure her.

“Is this some kind of a joke?” Her lips began to tremble.

He wanted to take her into his arms and comfort her, but he knew he shouldn’t. The truth was beginning to sink in.

“No, it’s not a joke.” He tried to sound reassuring.

“Then you’re a liar. You’ve been lying to me all this time.” Panic lived in every one of the words. Her face appeared horror stricken.

“I don’t lie.”

He watched her struggle with her thoughts.

“I know that,” she said as her eyes closed and she slid off the chair and on to the floor.

Autumn Archer: A Northern Irish #1 Bestselling Romance Author who thrives on gin and the written word. She's a mother to two cool kids, two cute dogs and has a fluffle of wild rabbits in the back garden. Between working in the city during the day, entertaining the brood, feeding the husband and cuddling with the pups, she somehow manages to write romance.

Brie Paisley is a small town gal from Mississippi. She always wanted to write at a young age and was always filling journals with her thoughts and short stories. Brie started with the idea of Worshipped a year ago and with the encouragement of her husband and sister in law, she was able to write her first book. When she is not writing, you can find her reading a good book, painting, scrapbooking, or watching a good movie with her husband and her boxer.

Summer Zoris is an author, wife, mother, reader and coffee lover who loves to take you on an emotional ride with her books.
When she was younger, it was her best friend who got her into writing in the first place. School was boring? Afternoon off? Fanfic writing was what they would do for hours to no end. Publishing, though, hadn't been anything on Summer's radar until she woke up one day from a very vivid dream. It was one of those you can't get rid of, so she ended up writing it down. And writing some more on it. Until a full story started to emerge. It was her best friend who ended up pushing her to take the next step and put the book out there.

Laura Farr: A Wife and Mummy of 2 who is pursuing her dream of writing.

Rachael Tonks is a romance author with a love of books, and a particular love of the romance genre. As a child Rachael could always be found with her head in a book, but it wasn't until the beginning of 2015 when Rachael's love of books really took over. Reading spurred on her desires to put pen to paper. Starting out her career with a new adult romance novel, she has now published multiple novels, ranging from dark romance to contemporary. Rachael lives in the steely suburb of Sheffield, in the north of England with her family. She has 3 beautiful children and a crazy dog. She loves nothing more reading with a good cup of tea and is self-proclaimed chocoholic!

Paige Thomas debut novel Starstruck was originally released by Ellora's Cave Publishing in 2013, with her first short story Count Me In following close behind. Since parting ways with the now defunct publisher, she decided to become an independent author.
Paige is a contemporary romance author who loves to add splashes of other genres into her work. Whether it's thriller, suspense, mystery or paranormal, someone's usually sarcastic and someone always gets laid.
She lives on the central coast of New South Wales, Australia with her husband and son, and continues to battle her addiction to dark chocolate and hot musicians.
She wants to be Stephen King when she grows up.

Stacy McWilliams is a Scottish Author who loves romance. All of her books have a romantic element and her books will keep you on the edge of your seat, make you want to throw your kindle around and her characters will make you either love them or loathe them.

Rae B Lake is a daydreamer, nurse, bookworm, nature enthusiast, wife, momma, animal activist and an optimist. She has lived her entire life in NYC and loves to travel with her family. She believes that sweets should have a larger piece of the nutritional pyramid and that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the best TV shows ever invented. When she is not working as a nurse in her community, she can either be found reading, writing, or taking a walk while listening to music. She has been writing books in her mind for as long as she can remember but decided that maybe there were others out in the world that would find joy in the words she would put down on the page.

Renea Porter is best known for writing realistic stories with realistic characters. Her stories may even cause you to shed a tear or two. She mainly writes New Adult and Contemporary Romances. However, she's not afraid to venture into other genres like Paranormal Romance.
She enjoys spending time with her husband of fourteen years, and stepson. She calls Pennsylvania home but loves to travel and try new things. In her free time, you can catch her reading books, watching reality tv, and baking.

Lara Norman used to scribble her fictional characters down on legal pads in high school, and then not show them to anyone. In recent years, she started posting her work in public forums for feedback, which gave her the courage to publish professionally.
She needs copious amounts of coffee and chocolate to survive. She enjoys eavesdropping on the character conversations in her head, which she has been assured doesn't make her crazy. She always gets the best ideas while in the shower, driving, or about to fall asleep.
Though she's a Florida girl at heart, Lara currently resides in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her husband of twenty years and their three children, where she is living out her own happily ever after with the boy she met at age fifteen.

Eden Rose As a child, I loved telling stories to entertain myself and my friends from the beginning. The most outlandish stories about random things that I concocted in my head, I would tell to my friends and family. It took many years for me to harness that into an actual book. Once I bit the bullet and decided to publish Save Me (The Lucky Family Series), I had to continue writing.

Lynn Steigleder ~ an interview and his novel ~ Terminal Core

I AM PLEASED TO WELCOME AUTHOR
Lynn Steigleder

AUTHOR BIO:

Lynn Steigleder was born in Richmond, Virginia. He spent most of his adult life as a supervisor in the field of construction and fabrication. In 2006, Lynn received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Lynn realized the need to transition into a new career path due to his energy and mobility challenges.

His son suggested he consider writing as a career; having enjoyed his father’s short stories. Lynn agreed to the challenge and his first novel “Rising Tide” in the series, of the same name was released for publication in 2009. The second “Eden’s Wake” and the third “Deadly Reign” soon followed. “Terminal Core”, a standalone was released in 2016. "Dalon Con" (The Essence of Time) is in the editing process and a fourth book for the "Rising Tide" series is nearing completion.

Lynn writes science fiction, fantasy and action adventure.

Lynn’s ideas are often driven by daily events, things he sees in nature or any path his imagination decides to lead him down. He loves to write and enjoys the challenges of bringing a novel from conception, working with his publisher through the editing process, rewrites and reading the book many times before it goes to print.

BANTER – STUFF ABOUT YOU
Q: Are you a morning person, or a midnight candle burner?
A: Both. I irritate people with my jolly attitude in the morning yet feel if I go to bed early I’m going to miss something.

Q: Tell me something you would like your readers (fans) to know about you.
A: I love salt water. All the creatures whether edible or not fascinate me. Nothing beats the taste, smell or sight of the ocean. If I could I would spend all my free time surf fishing on Hatteras island.

Q: When you think of a garden, do you picture vegetables or flowers?
A: Vegetables. A summer bounty of fresh vegetables could almost turn me into a vegetarian, but then I remember the luscious slabs of beef to be enjoyed and that thought goes out the door.

Q: What kind of music do you listen to? Do you have an all time favorite song?
A: Rock, Red Barchetta is a song from a band named Rush. I started following them in 1976. They retired in 2015 after 41 years of incompritable music. Sadly their drummer (Neil Peart) passed several weeks ago.

BOOKS – ABOUT THE CRAFT

Q: When did you start writing and why?
A: I started writing short stories 25 years ago. I never thought I had the patience to pen an entire novel. At the suggestion of my son on a surf fishing trip, I began my trek into the world of writing.

Q: How did you come to write your genre of choice?
A:Science Fiction has been my favorite in books and movies since I was a child

Q: Which element of book writing is the most difficult for you?
A: Keeping a overabundance of characters in a state of continuity from one end of the book to the other.

Q: What is your favorite part of writing?
A: Creating new worlds, new characters, and pulling them through change at a drop of a hat.

Q; Now your least favorite part?
A: Marketing. It is a necessary part of writing, but it’s the one I would almost rather set my head on fire than participate in.

Q: Who's your favorite author?
A: Stephen King. I love his work, though I wish he would tone down the language a bit.

Q: Your favorite title?
A: The Dark Tower

Q: Are you a sit down and play it by ear kind of writer, or do you need a structured guideline, or maybe a little of both?
A: I’m a play it by ear or as I prefer to put it “fly by the sweat of my pants”. When I begin a new book, I stare at the screen running ideas through my head until one clicks.

BOOKS - NOW LETS PROMOTE – STRUT YOUR STUFF

Q: What are you working on now? Would you like to share anything about it?
A: The fourth book in my “Rising Tide” series

Q: Do you have a new book coming out soon? Tell us about it.
A: I just sent a standalone manuscript named “Dalon Con, the Essence of time” to my publisher

Q: How can we find you? Do you have a web page, FaceBook page or any buy links?

EXCERPT:
CLAY STEPPED UP onto the raised walkway.

"I hate this place," he mumbled, patting his sidearm. He grabbed the door handle and prepared to enter.

Clay was a bounty hunter. His latest skip (if you want to call him that since Clay had spent the better part of two years chasing empty leads) was Sal Ricky—a career criminal with a taste for refined women, as he would consume certain body parts of his victims after performing whatever atrocities piqued his fancy.

Clay stood tall, six foot five. He almost always wore black, except for his blue jeans. He felt it more intimidating.

He stepped into the brothel. A dozen pair of eyes turned his way. Clay removed his sidearm from its holster.

"I'm looking for Sal Ricky," he announced. After a slight pause, he repeated the phrase. "I said, I'm looking for Sal Ricky."

"If you want me, all you gotta do is ask," came a smug response. The voice emanated from a dark corner. In it stood a six foot tall figure. Instead of legs, it sported four eight foot long appendages. These members would shoot forward landing on the ground and allow the rest of the body to move over them like treads on a tank. He could move surprisingly fast when necessary.

"So?" Sal Ricky asked. "What can I do for you?"

Clay moved closer toward the corner and cocked his weapon.

"Don't play stupid, you ball of snot." He raised his free hand and pointed a finger. "I've been looking for you for almost two years now." Clay cocked the second hammer on his handgun. "This time you're all mine."

Sal Ricky was a hydrak. He lived up to his name, constantly oozing fluid and leaving a trail similar to that of a slug when he moved.

"Ya think so." The creature lit a cigarette with two human-like hands. The hydrak inhaled deeply, burning up half the smoke in one drag.

"Better men have tried," he said, finishing his cigarette with a second drag and dropping it into a puddle of slime; the butt hissed as the glowing ashes died.

Clay tightened his grip.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way. I get just as much for you dead as alive." Clay smiled out of one corner of his mouth. "It makes no difference to me."

Sal Ricky crossed his arms which were anything but human. They were muscular with a lizard-like texture and a green color to match. His lower half was bulbous and horizontal to the ground, turning vertical at mid-thorax until it formed his head.

"Don't you tire of the same old clichés?" Sal Ricky snickered. "Easy way, hard way, alive or dead, blah, blah, blah. After two years, you should know I do nothing the easy way." His head was square with a round circle on each side. Sal Ricky could spin his neck three hundred and sixty degrees if need be. He had a set of eyes at the upper portion of each circle. One side contained an orifice with which he spoke and took in nourishment. One big tuft of green hair sprang from the center of his scalp, climbed vertically, about a foot, and then flopped over on all sides.

"Have it your way," Clay said.

Just then, two dark humanoid figures appeared on either side of the slug. The first figure made a move and then slipped on his boss' excretions, landing flat on his back.

Clay rolled to his right behind a steel column and fired one barrel, removing most of the second figure's head. The first man, still floundering in the goo, was an easy take out.

Sal Ricky moved toward Clay knocking him to the floor as he passed by.

Clay moved to one knee and steadied himself. He would have but one shot.

Sal Ricky could easily burst through the wall, and that's what he had a mind to do, Clay surmised. He made sure both hammers were cocked. Cocking them was one thing; firing both at the same time was something you didn't do unless you had to.

Clay took a deep breath and pulled both triggers.

Five years later she is compelled to visit Minerva’s Mystic Museum. The ‘powers that be’ have interceded giving her the chance to change that destiny.

Korina is sent home where she discovers it is the morning of her wedding day. Determined to do the right thing, she marries Adam.

Does Korina have a kinky side as well?

How will she break the curse? Does she want to?

Here is the premise for the Mystic Museum Series
Minerva’s Mystic Museum is located in New York City. Every full moon the “powers that be” choose someone from the visitors of the museum. This someone, known as the mystic walker, will be the hero/heroine of the novel. The “powers” select someone they feel deserves a second chance, or just a chance to follow their destiny. Minerva, the curator and caretaker of the museum meets the chosen mystic walker. Through the magic that has been entrusted to her, Minerva supplies them with the opportunity to change their lives.

TEASER / EXCERPT:
Set up for the teaser – Korina is back at home. It is (once again) her wedding day.
Teaser:
Korina ran into her mother’s arms. Tears flowed down her cheeks.

“What’s the matter, Kori?” her mother asked.

“Nothing, Mom. I’m just happy to see you. I love you. I’ve missed you.”

She squeezed her mother in a loving hug, burying her face in her mother’s neck.

“Last night you were threatening to run away. You didn’t seem to be concerned about missing me then.”

“I’m sorry about that. I was acting childish. I’m thir—” She cleared her throat. “Twenty-five years old and an adult. I have to take my responsibilities seriously, even if it’s not what I want.”

“Now it’s my turn to be sorry. I have had a look at this man who is to be your husband. I’m afraid the rumors are true. He’s not very good-looking. We can only hope the rest of it is lies. No one can be as heartless as they say he is.”

“It will be all right, Mother.”

“Well, on the bright side…there is a clause in the betrothal agreement.”

“A clause?”

Her mother nodded.

“As long as no children are conceived, either party may end the marriage on the anniversary of the union.” A tear slipped down her cheek. “I’m sorry, baby.”

“I can have my freedom after one year?” She almost bubbled over in her happiness. She’d just done five long years in lonely exile. One year of marriage would be a piece of cake.

“It’s going to be a busy day. You need to get started. Have something to eat. After that, I’ll meet you in your room.”

Here I am, on my first blind date, ever, courtesy of a smartphone app and my two annoying best friends.

So what is Chris “Fletch” Fletcher doing, walking across the room, looking at his phone like he’s pattern matching a picture to find a real person he’s never met before?

Oh.

Oh, no.

The guy I drop-kicked in seventh grade cannot be my blind date. The guy who earned me this infernal nickname.

That’s right.

Feisty.

Excerpt:
I charge Fletch, channeling it all, giving him what he's asking for.

He moves as I plow into the bag, my body still unable to attack him directly, his hands on my waist as I spin. Dropping to the ground, I use my lower position to twist out of his grasp, leg cocked and ready, but he's fast.

So fast.

Sweat sprouts all over my body like someone's misting me, the sudden crush of hormones, heat, and the pounding physicality of what we're doing making me wet.

In more ways than one.

I'm a mixture of revulsion and arousal, hating myself for feeling this way as his arms encircle me, my mind split between re-igniting the terror of the preschool attack and the very real, visceral feel of Fletch's skin against mine, welcoming the rutting, animal-like push of his slick thigh muscles against my arm as I fight him, working to pin him.

Failing miserably.

By the time we're done, this scrimmage is a joke, his body pressing me into the ground, arms immovable, my breath heating his nose as he looks down on me with a grin.

And then that fades.

Replaced by the unfiltered expression of a man who is falling. Falling, falling, falling into me.

Like time itself has collapsed.

And the sheer force of attraction is how we propel ourselves forward.

“This is great!” Michael shouts from the sidelines, the click click click of his shutter breaking the silence, Fletch's hips digging into mine, his hardness making it clear how he feels about me.

He doesn't move. My wrists are pressed into the mat, my hair tugging at the roots, caught under my shoulder blades.

“See?” he whispers in the space between us. “Not happening again. You kicked my ass in seventh grade. But we're not tweens now, are we?”

As he says the words, my nipples harden, a yearning in the form of flesh centering between my legs. All I want to do right now is wrap my ankles around his waist and be screwed four ways to Sunday.

If that's even really a thing.

“No,” I gasp, fighting and failing to be freed. “We're not. And if we're not, then what are we?”

“You tell me, Fiona. What are we?”

All the oxygen in the room rushes out. I'm left in space, floating, aimless and without anchor.

Jolene was wrong.

So wrong.

Space isn't my friend. It's my enemy. It's where everything safe becomes dangerous.

Where Fletch becomes the good guy.

The hot guy.

The I-need-him-in-me guy.

And where it's all caught on camera.

Because this journey started there, with Rico and cameras and people watching me because they can.

As Michael shoots photos and dictates angles, all I feel is Fletch's rum-THUM-rum-THUM beat, his heart against mine, telling me stories that go back seventeen years.

Before my heart wall had turrets. Before my heart wall had defenses and gun mounts and cannons.

Before I had a wall around my heart at all.

The kiss comes, unexpected but oh, so right. Fletch's mouth is inevitable, lips on mine like fate herself stepped into the frame and ordered us to do this. Logically, it makes no sense, but emotionally, it’s what the universe dictates, the kiss aligning so many layers of my being that it's almost painful how perfect this is.

His hands loosen at my wrists, one threading its way through my hair, tugging just enough to break the sensuality of this moment, but also brutal enough to make my hips rise up and beg for more. His tongue is exploring me like no good guy should, nothing but bad and filthy and raunchy and a promise of slick, hot, no-holds-barred sex if I just let him in, just let him try, just let him–

Just plain old let him.

But first, I have to let myself.

Author Bio:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 4 New York Times bestsellers and more than 19 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French and German, with more titles releasing in 2020 and beyond.

From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire she met in a romantic comedy).

She lives in New England with her husband and three children where she is the only person in the household with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.

Melora Johnson ~ an interview and her novel ~ Earthbound

I AM PLEASED TO WELCOME AUTHOR

Melora Johnson

AUTHOR BIO
Melora Johnson is a poet and novelist living in Upstate New York with her husband, daughter, a black cat, and quite a few chickens. Her most recent published work includes A Sanctuary Built of Words: Poems of Peace, Grief, and Passion, and publication in The Sexuality Poems from Foothills Publishing. She also runs a large and thriving writer's group for adults. Of course, into every life a little rain must fall as well as the occasional tornado, but you'll find that amply covered in her writing.

BANTER – STUFF ABOUT YOU

Q: Are you a morning person, or a midnight candle burner?
A: I am mostly a morning person, but have been known to stay up late too – particularly when I’m trying to get something done after getting my daughter to sleep. Ideally, I’d love a siesta in the middle of the afternoon then burn the candle at both ends of the day.

Q: Tell me one thing about each of the four seasons you like. It can be anything.
A: Winter = I love to watch snowflakes falling through the light from streetlamps. I have a very strong recollection of standing next to the wood stove in my parents house as a child looking out at the street and watching the snow sift down.
Spring = One of my favorite scents is when the earth is just thawing and the grass is turning green again in the late winter or early spring, it’s so fresh and like the earth is awakening.
Summer = I love having the windows and the doors open at night, the smell of summer night air, and watching the fireflies float over the fields, mirrored by the stars in the sky.
Fall = I grew up near lots of maple trees and that blaze of color as they change in October, then they fall and you have the smell of dry leaves and sound of the crunch as you walk through them. It’s my favorite season.

Q: Bedtime, relaxing so you can sleep sounds. Is your preference, white noise, TV, soft music, ocean waves, forest or meadow sounds, babbling brook, or something else?
A: If I’m actually trying to get to sleep, it’s white noise because there’s already so much going on in my head that I sometimes have to use a mantra to shut it down. If I’m just relaxing? I’d probably choose the babbling brook.

Q: If your life were a movie, would it be considered an action film, comedy, drama, romance, fantasy or a combination?
A: My life would probably be one of those dramas with LOTS of humor. (They’re my favorite kind.) Weird stuff has always happened to me, like the time I got on the highway at dusk in heavy traffic and this little purple taxi in front of me lost it and bounced off the wall to our right several times. I managed to get past her then pull over and call for help, but the driver just shimmied across her front seat, trotted up to my car in this wild Christmas sweater, asked if I was okay, then took off when I said yes. That went right into the story I was working on.

BOOKS – ABOUT THE CRAFT

Q: Where do you get your ideas?
A: For me, ideas are everywhere! Articles in newspapers, magazines, and headlines online, stories people tell me, the weird things that happen to me – it’s ALL material.

Q: How did you come to write your genre of choice?
A: I’m a librarian as well as a writer and I read just about every genre, and I love them all. I’ve written mysteries, science fiction, horror, literary pieces – supernatural is always something that has fascinated me though and shows up in most things, because my life is weird that way. I’m writing paranormal romance right now, but I’ll cycle around to other things again.

Q: When crafting the story do you go from beginning to end, or do you jump around writing the scenes that are pushing themselves forward in your brain?
A: When I am writing, I try to work from the beginning toward the end, using logic. What does the character want in this scene? Who is working against them? If they get what they want, what’s the catch? If they don’t get it, what now? How do they react to what happened, emotionally and logically? What’s the new goal? But, I do jump around whenever I get a strong image of a scene in my mind.

Q: Do you always know how a story will end when you begin writing it?
A: I rarely ever know how a story will end when I begin it. Most of the time, I’m writing to find out what happens to my characters. With Earthbound, I didn’t even know who the enemy was or what they wanted, let alone how things would work out for Ally.

BOOKS - NOW LETS PROMOTE – STRUT YOUR STUFF

Q: What are you working on now? Would you like to share anything about it?
A: I am currently working on the sequel to my novel Earthbound. It’s called Firebound and takes place about seven months down the road, from the perspective of Jennifer, who is Ally’s best friend in Earthbound. A lot of the characters from Earthbound will be returning but with some interesting additions. Jen encountered some life altering circumstances in Earthbound, and Firebound has her finding her new direction.

Q: Do you have a new book coming out soon? Tell us about it.
A: Earthbound was actually just released in January. It’s a paranormal romance. Ally is a veterinarian and a raptor rehabilitator with an extra spark for healing in her hands, but the reason for that spark has put her on the hit list of some very dangerous beings. Enter Matt. He has some secrets of his own and some of them are about Ally.

Q: How can we find you? Do you have a web page, FaceBook page or any buy links?
A: Absolutely, all of the above!

Blurb:
Ally Reynolds is a veterinarian specializing in raptor rehabilitation in New Hampshire. Other than one horrific incident in her childhood and a little extra “spark” for healing in her hands, both of which she has kept secret from even her best friend, her life has been singularly boring. It has also been extremely lonely. Ally longs for someone to share her life with, but how can she trust anyone with her secret?

Matthew Blake, an ornithologist at Cornell University, calls Ally, asking for her help with an injured raptor. Matthew grew up in New Zealand and has lived around the world. He has read about Ally’s high success rates in raptor rehabilitation and suspects there is more to it than is generally known.

Matthew has some secrets of his own; he is a demon hunter. He suspects Ally’s healing powers could benefit him. He wants her to join him and thinks they’d make a great team.

Can Ally trust him or is he just using her? Matthew definitely has more secrets, and some of them are about Ally.

Excerpt:
I ended up dropping Jen home before heading back up my “mountain.” It’s really more of a hill well outside of town. My parents had always warned me to hide my… differences after the incident; no one ever questioned my father’s story about what happened.

I simply couldn’t run the risk of people finding out. It made getting close to people very difficult, if not downright impossible. Luckily, I’d always been predisposed to work with animals. They didn’t care how I was different, were even grateful for it at times.

But meeting someone new? A guy? Someone I would want to connect with, open up to? Shit. I had to force myself to stick to the speed limit.

When I walked in the door, the message light blinked on the phone base. “Son of a…” My stomach clenched. I wasn’t ready for this. She couldn’t have already called some guy to set me up, could she? She had practically been passed out when I left her place. A horrifying thought occurred to me - had she drunk dialed someone? I considered leaving the message until morning, but I had to know what it said. I dialed into my voicemail with sincere misgivings.

The male voice which came across the line did not speak with a North American accent; however, I couldn’t place where it was from. The tone reminded me of good coffee, rich and just as warm. “Hello, my name is Matthew Scott Blake.”

I blinked. Who introduced themselves with three names? Didn’t they reserve that for serial killers or assassins?

“I’m from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. I’m trying to contact Doctor Allyson Reynolds. We have a pair of nesting eagles here; the male has been badly hurt. We were hoping Doctor Reynolds could help us out. Please, could she give me a call at her earliest convenience?”

The phone number followed. I replayed it a couple times to make sure I got it written down correctly. Thank God. Cornell was a premier veterinarian school. Dad had brought me there to visit when I was considering colleges. They also had a wonderful ornithology lab we had visited. I would go to Ithaca to help with the eagle. At least that would get me away from anyone Jen wanted to throw at me for a bit. Maybe she’d forget about it in the meantime.

TEASER / EXCERPT:
Billy slumped back in his seat at the dinner table. He crossed his arms over his chest and kicked his feet out. “I hate broccoli,” he complained. His frown and closely knit eyebrows punctuated the words.

Nadine smiled at her petulant grandson. “Imagine you are a giant and they are trees.” She chuckled.

Billy thought about that for a moment. “Trees don’t taste good either.” His bottom lip pushed outward.

“They taste good to giants,” Shamika said.

“Really?” Billy leaned forward. “Have you seen a giant?”

“Not one big enough to eat a tree. You would be the first giant I’ve ever seen do that.”

Billy leaned forward and picked up a broccoli spear between his fingers.

Shamika popped her eyes open in pretended shock and anticipation. She framed her lips in an O. Maintaining the shocked expression, she said, “Wow.”

Billy put the broccoli head into his mouth. He watched as Shamika’s eyes opened even wider. In an exaggerated movement he bit down and ripped the bushy head of the broccoli off in his mouth.

“Oh, my!” Shamika exclaimed, clutching her hands in front of her chest.

Billy chewed the greenery. His face expressed his dislike, but he swallowed the vegetable anyway.

“Good boy,” Nadine said.

“Good giant,” Shamika added and winked. Billy laughed and took another bite. Shamika smiled.
